About University of Missouri Kansas City

The University of Missouri Kansas City, or UMKC for short, is an institution of higher learning located in Kansas City, which is largest city in the U.S. state of Missouri, as well as one of two county seats of Jackson County, the other being Independence, located just east of the city. The population of Kansas City was estimated at a number of more than 475 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, its metro area having more than 2 million people living within its limits.

The university became part of the University of Missouri System, in July 1963, at the urging of alumni Hilary A. Bush, and today, is well known for its educational programs and academic divisions, which include the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Nursing and the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration. The School of Medicine is regionally known for its six-year post-secondary program, The School of Law being known for producing more future judges than any other law school in Missouri, as a local business publication called Ingram's Magazine stated.

The athletic teams from University of Missouri Kansas City are known as the UMKC Kangaroos, who compete in 16 sports, for both men’s and women’s, in The Summit League, including in soccer, cross country, golf, tennis, softball and basketball.
